Calculus

Dr. Jonathan Mitchell will teach Calculus for 12th graders at Regent's Academy. He earned his B.S. ('04) and M.S. ('06) in Mathematics from Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA). He then earned his Ph.D. ('10) in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Southern Methodist University. For five years, he taught mathematics at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX, where he earned the Holland Award of Excellence, which is given annually to a single faculty member in the Holland School of Sciences and Mathematics. Since 2015, he has taught several courses as part of the Mathematics and Statistics Department at SFA. Jonathan is married ('07) to his spouse, Katy Mitchell (Little Kids Director at Grace Bible Church), and they have three children: Luke ('09), Parker ('11), and Reese ('16). For fun, Jonathan enjoys reading and playing basketball and board games with his family.

In class, there is the freedom to pray as a class, share real-life connections to the content, and go after the heart of an issue or question. Every math question involves assumed premises… just like real-life questions. My hope is to get students to strive for "why does that work" instead of merely "what's the answer". Oh yeah, and to ensure students learn calculus.

All truth is God's, including mathematical truth, and it beautifully fits together in ways one must dive into in order to fully appreciate it.
